Phil Schrodt finally talked publicly about GDELT in a panel at ISA. It's ugly - the base data on which Gdelt was based is a part of Speed, but incomplete, stolen in full from Illinois. He said he saw compelling evidence towards it, confirming all rumors here. The rest was made from god knows what... Further, Phil and Jay said they are skeptical on how the data was actually made - neither Phil nor John Beieler were aware on how the data was actually computed as they never saw Leetaru's pipeline and switches. Imagine that, endorsing a data set you had no idea how it was made. Phil further said that GDELT has cases were same article produced two different outputs (which can only be due to not segmenting input), proof that Tabari was misused... Plus stories of gag orders and monetary loss.
Fun panel, especially when Phil compared a certain estonian con man with Jar Jar Binks on crack. And himself with the investment banker suggesting Maddoff as a worthwhile investment.
