With all the conferences coming up (SPSA, ISA, WSPA, MPSA), I would like to start a list of things you should never do if you want a job and/or the respect of your colleagues. I have seen people do all of these things.
-Try not to argue with your discussant when they criticize your paper. They're just trying to help. Even if you think the discussant is an idiot, just smile and say "that's a good point, thank you." If you must, write down what you really want to say on the paper in front of you.
-Don't get tanked at the hotel bar unless you have tenure. Save that for the bars downtown.
-Don't ask questions at a panel just to be noticed.
-Don't use Q&A time to talk about your research.
