If you are conservative in a non absurd or fascist way, you won't have problems at most places. If you are aggressive (ie, telling people at a public forum that they are going to hell because of their incorrect religion) or push your views (a former colleague who spend all of his class on economic development on his opposition to impeachment)you will have problems.
Advice for a Conservative PhD student

push your views (a former colleague who spend all of his class on economic development on his opposition to impeachment)you will have problems.
Sure, but how many of your colleagues spend all of their class on x topic on their support for impeachment without having any problem?

Conservative grad students in our program often thought that grad school was going to be like more undergrad with some debate club mixed in. They struggled and explained it as some vague bias against conservatism. They didn’t care to explain why other conservative students who excelled did not report the same alleged hostile environment. No one ever thinks that they are the problem.

Ya know that ain't gonna happen... sooner or later these fundie born-again crustaceans will claim anyone who is pro-choice or for marriage equality is a Marxist who will burn for all eternity !

I'm a white nationalist grad student, though not especially conservative (e.g., not religious, not anti-ab0rtion, etc.) Obviously, I keep my views entirely unvoiced on non-anonymous platforms, with other students, etc. For all the hilarious bias, academia still prods you to read a lot, learn to program, and generally be assertive about your intellectual acuity. The fact that you are not permitted to even hint at what you really think helps with self-discipline and maintaining a dispassionate tone.
It is a pity that fellow students and profs are intolerant, but I myself am ideologically tolerant and do not reduce a person to their unfortunate self-h0ting multiculti views. They are just an overly agreeable product of their oppressive anti-white environment, but otherwise often pretty interesting and decent people. Under a different regime, their views would have probably been different as well.

mostly just the crazy ones who don't have any power. But it is probably very different in History, Sociology, English, Ed, etc.sincerely,

If you are a regular conservative, it is fine but if you are crazy, I do not think you will be getting a job.
There is a person in the program I am in who believes racism is fake. This person argues there should be racism for the improvement of AA people. This person believes colonization is a perfect thing because it helped the development of underdeveloped countries.
This person is also very dismissive. When you are docile and want to argue a point purely on research and its merits, this person does not engage with you. Basically, you either agree with this person or you are completely out of your mind.
This person also says these things to professors, including the ones in his subfield who will probably be his advisors. On several occasions, he called a professor stupid to the professor's face.

If you are conservative in a non absurd or fascist way
This is already starting to get old.I don’t think they know that many conservative academics.
I would say most conservative academics are pretty different from your average Trump voter. For example, conservative academics don’t say dumb stuff like “the 2020 election was stolen!”
Romney is closer to your average conservative academic than Trump.
-
Leftist here - I have some Conservative colleagues with whom we discuss politics.
As long as the discussion respects boundaries (both in tone and in terms of respect for democracy), there is no problem.
If some of them would start saying that the election was stolen, or that the attack on Capitol Hill was justified, my reaction would be entirely different.
Bottom line: as long as you don't cross from Conservative to Fascist, you are safe.
(Same argument works also for us at the other end of the spectrum)The problem is that the word "fascist" here just means "stuff I don't like". The Americans who fought in WW2 would be considered fascist by your standards. To you a conservative is a RINO Republican like Romney.

But if I am forced to defend my views or prompted to state what I believe as a Christian, then I will say that I believe J=ws and hom0se7uals go to hell because that is what God teaches in the bible.

God will bless your faithfulness, Brother Steve!

You're not conservative, but a radical-right religious zealot.
How about you stick to the interpretation of Christianity created in the 20th century by an episcopalian lesbian on the Democratic Party's payroll, and I'll stick to my 2000 year old Orthodox tradition of apostolic teachings and church fathers, and then we'll see who's right when we return to our maker?

If you are religious that is fine, few will hold that against you if you love your neighbour like Jesus taught you to do. You'll find that some of your peers are also religious - in their own faiths - and hold similar views, even if they do not wear them on their sleeves.
Do not insult people who do not agree with you. Treat others as you would want to be treated.
