MC I have not dealt with in an advisee/advisor role. Having said that, I've heard things and he is a bit hot headed and is way into self-preservation (the latter is a problem because at any school outside of the T5 you need an advisor who will help you greatly. He is not the type to do that).
LM is not a bad advisor. Like every advisor there are pros and cons, but she is not someone you should avoid. She is someone you should engage with even if you are not interested in IPE.

Simple time-management, at UW you must devote time to writing. This can result in an at times terse bedside manner to grad students and even more so to undergrads. But while you may see it as a problem of "self-preservation" it is a perfectly reasonable selfishness when it comes to budgeting time.

don't believe that is what Tori is referencing, but I can see how students would react to terseness. And I've had lovely interactions, as a grad student, with non IR faculty. Not one was terse, so "must devote time to writing" argument is weak. Plenty of people devote time to writing, but are still civil.

Just ask your prospective advisors how many talented students they have had who struck out on the job market.
Stanislav Branchev is good at this. Just imagine a letter where he compares students to himself and declares himself to be clearly far smarter and more capable. Then there's probably a few pages calling the search committee members idiots for not understanding his work and some space lamenting sexism in the discipline track changed in from comments lamenting the death of masculinity.
