One of our recent grad students (I’m from an institution that has had 2 tenure track placements in the last 3 years) repeatedly shows up in anime themed t-shirts and gym shorts to the office, I mentioned it to my colleague and he said that it was the norm at his previous institution. Am I getting old or is general attire for male students khakis and button down?
Attire for graduate students?

The brother will be unemployed in a few years, let him have it

What if they teach? You suddenly become stvpd in shorts?
Khakis and button down is fairly common. Nice jeans and a flannel is also common. T shirts and shorts also common. Unless they’re teaching that day I don’t think it really matters. You become a disrespectful and disrespected cI0wn.
Frankly, unless you live in the tropics, no adult man has any reason to wear shorts outside the context of going to the beach, the gym, a backyard barbecue, or jogging.

I primarily wore jeans and a polo to work in. Jeans and a button down for brownbags and that sort of thing.

See I generally don’t find myself as somewhere who cares about attire. I came from finance where sports coats are the norm and I always thought it was stupid. However, I see why places have formal dress codes if people will just dress like this to their “job”.

Do you teach at Hogwarts U?

Lol. Everyone I know under the age of 50 or so teaches in jeans and a button down.

Tenured bro here. I wear jeans and a t-shirt to campus every day (by which I mean the two days a week I go to campus). Because I totally dg/af about impressing anyone. The fact that so many people are small-minded judgmental faha/g/its like the posters above is why non-tenured people should dress better than I do.
