hopped on the experimental wave early, like SH. now reaping the benefits. it's about market timing.
jumping on the experimental wave early is basically 100% of SH's career.
She had two kids and thus two years on the tenure clock. That means we should ask if that's a good record for someone who started in 2015, not 2013. I also assume that means that she didn't start her tenure clock over entirely, since you don't go up in your fourth year anywhere.
Also how is JB underperforming? She has two solo-authored books prior to tenure.
First book came out in 2012 and the second is forthcoming. She started at Berkeley in 2013 with presumably a fresh tenure clock. You can change the rules to include her work before starting the job, but that just demonstrates the shiftiness of standards in our discipline. If she were to go up for tenure now, she would have one forthcoming book and a few sub field articles. Hardly a slam dunk for supposedly one of the best departments in the country. Or even to justify her existing salary which is above most full profs in the country.
^I'll bet you wouldn't be satisfied if Berkeley hired a black Republican.
You should learn the difference between descriptive and substantive representation. Berkeley has plenty of folks who study "black" issues, just none who are black themselves. My post is a call for more black faculty regardless of ideological orientation. I doubt the pool of qualified black Republicans is very large, but I would certainly welcome one. Maybe you should take an REP course sometime.
I'm guessing UCB will be raiding the professors from the other, lesser UC campuses...but this is just a guess.
And a dumb oneCorrect. This is dumb. The unwritten rule is that UCs don't do this to other UCs.
There are also written rules that discourage this. If you move from one UC to another, you can only move up one step and get a raise of a few thousand dollars.
Given that virtually no one at UCB actually has a salary on the ladder, how much does only moving up one step actually matter?

So let me rephrase. UCB should really figure out how to hire some women URM candidates for their school so that they can at least plausibly be representative of the USA. Especially in their American politics group.
recent jr hire is also a woc.
You wouldn't stand to benefit personally from such a policy, now would you Amity? This is all about the good of the country, right?

Uh, it's worse. You can't move to another UC with an off-market increase I believe, just a merit step increase. It's basically collusion that's somehow legally allowed.

That was exactly the point of the post you quoted dingbat.

Lol eat s**t you bird.
I'm a white male with tenure. If we want to hire, we have to show we took steps to diversify the pool. If we don't have URMs on the list of flyouts, we will have questions. We have diversity folks on search committees. We have meetings before the search about how to diversify our faculty. And if need to go senior when we have an assistant prof line to get a more diverse candidate, the university will kick in resources. So yeah, they have no excuse for not hiring URMs. Berkeley is like any other research university. And for them to not have any URM faculty is really a joke.
