OP got three offers and a waitlist among these places. Applied for Methods and CP, interested in both formal and statistical/computational methods. Any thoughts or advice? Thanks!!
Choosing among NYU, DUKE, WUSTL & Vandy
-
For a generic quantitative political scientist:
NYU >~ Duke > WashU >> Vanderbilt
But it depends on your research interests. And it shouldn’t matter too much, on average; they are all good schools. It’s funny how all causal inference training goes out of the windows when academics estimate the treatment affect of going to this or that school

WashU and NYU are on the same level when it comes to methods training. They both produce very good quant focus political scientist. They both killed it on the job market last year. Not sure about this year.
Who were you planning to work with?Have you seen the Duke placements this year? Kind of on top. Except not kind of. on top.

They're having a nice year, but a) they're not "top", as people who have a more accurate view of total placements and don't rely on the list generated here, by people with extremely incomplete information, and b) single years can be very noisy and shouldn't be used over multi-year data.

NYU is the obvious choice unless you have ties to the Midwest. Even then, NYU placed LM at WUSTL so can ask her about this. Vandy is on the rise, but not even close yet. Duke is good, but on average, you're better off with NYU and then WUSTL.
NYU hired BM and is trying to hire MT, both WUSTL PhDs

NYU has Adam Przeworski and David Stavagewho do comp with formal and quant methods. Training is amazing a Duke and NYU, but I think you would get better advisors at NYU for what you want to do.
Also, this is rubbish. Przeworski and Stasavage are great scholars but they will not teach you formal modeling. However, NYU has people who train well in your areas of interest. So does WUSTL and Vanderbilt.
Of these three, the placement records are NYU > WUSTL > Vanderbilt.
