CP ABDs with Solo Hits in Top Subfield Journals

This is the second time this week I haven’t been able to see through online satire. Maybe I’m getting to old for this sh.it.

They hand out acceptances to these journals when you buy 8 or more gallons of gas at Shell.
WP. Lol, just lol!
WP is surely a dustbin. Everybody has at least 2 or 3 articles in it, although I wish I could take mine off of my CV now that I know better. They emailed me a preacceptance for my MPSA paper 2 years ago and I refused. Joke journal, and you are all above it.
This is the d.umbest trolling I think I have ever seen on PSR - and that’s saying something. WP has its problems, but ease of publishing is definitely not one of them.

It wasn't trolling. It was pointing to the ridiculousness of the comments being made. WP is clubby and sometimes publishes empirically weak work, but it is one of the top journals for a comparativist, and anybody would be thrilled to publish there. Most people will never land an article in a journal as prestigious as WP.

WP is simultaneously quite interesting but unfortunately also quite clubby. Setting quality aside (which of course we shouldn't), I would be a bit skeptical about its value if the author is a current or recent Princeton student. But I think Ranulph is right, it will be seen quite positively in most cases.

For CP, APSR=AJPS > JOP = BJPS. It’s not clear whether JOP/BJPS is indeed higher than CPS, WP and CP (though CP is usually considered lower than CPS and WP).

The gap between top sub field and top general seems quite big in CP to me

I’m not so sure. I think it’s probably harder to get a WP hit than a JOP hit, for example. APSR and AJPS are a clear cut above the rest through.

If you take the entire population of Comparativist ABDs, it’s super rare. But still, there are quite many of them in the very top schools (say CHYMPS) that have these + other things (some even have solo AJPS/APSR). The thing is that these people are sufficiently numerous to fill ALL the job openings. From time to time, there is a couple of non-CHYMPS ABDs who land a job opening, but this is becoming rare because the CHYMPS ABDs crowds out the market and they have everything (also teaching experience).

How rare is it for CP ABDs to have a hit in WP, CPS, or CP when hitting the market?

AJPS, APSR
Clear break

WP
JOP, BJPS, CPS
CP
... but much less of a break in the last three tiers.

I just did a quick check of the top 5 departments' job market candidates and there was only 2 or 3 that had a solo WP/CPS/CP hit. There were a couple that had a solo APSR/AJPS/JOP hit. So out of maybe 40 or so (this also included some portion of people already on post-docs), only 5 had a solo hit at a top subfield journal or general journal - approximately 12%. This percentage is going to significantly drop the further you go down the program rankings.

As arrogant as they are, Ansell and Samuells have ruined CPS. Bad crossnational data from Europe okay, subnational data with tight identification strategy from country that isn't China, Mexico, or Brazil not okay.
