It is important to have at least one single-authored article or book. And a few more won't hurt you. But, from there, your goal should be to create the most impactful publication record that you can. What that looks like depends on your area of research. However, it is not unusual that you are most likely to have that impact by forming diverse teams that are able to combine ideas and skills to good effect. That often means multi-authored publications.
Don't overvalue single-authored publications

How does coauthoring lead to more impact? I don't get it.
This is the only discipline I know of where people don't understand that ideas are improved by collaboration.
Political scientists are truly an antisocial breed.
That might be true. However, the person to whom you're replying is not a political scientist. He's possibly that deIusional unemployable nutter who's responsible for 90% of the posts here.

But are the coauthor teams really diverse?
And does greater diversity lead to greater impact

In short, yes. That’s why academic inbreeding is so frowned upon.

In some ways. My 2 favorite co-authors are a: the opposite gender and from a different country (though same race) and for b: 30 years older than I am though otherwise demographically similar.

I am a midcareer Americanist. I posted this because I am interested in hearing other people's thoughts on the topic. I'd also like it when we have political science-related discussions on PSR that aren't just about tearing people apart.

And does greater diversity lead to greater impact
The kind of diversity I am referring to is variety in skills and knowledge. For example, a team that has one person who is strong at designing experiments, a second person who is good at programming in R, and a final person who really understands the latest research on emotions, then these people may write better papers by working together.
For research supporting this idea, see Scott E. Page, The Difference (Princeton University Press, 2007).

He's a freerider seeking validation for his 99% co-authored record.
