During the reign of Tim Tebow many NFL players took to twitter to emphasize how "uncomfortable" (dare I say criticize) they were with Tim Tebow putting God in their face so much whenever a media camera was on him. No fines were levied, no players faced sanctions.

During the NFL draft many NFL players took to twitter to emphasize how "uncomfortable" (dare I say criticize) they were with Michael Sam putting cake in his boyfriend's face with a bigtime french kiss when a media camera was on him. Players who tweeted that they found coverage of the kiss to bother them were fined and told they had to be re-educated or lose their job.

Liberal Fascism much? Discuss.

Also (and yes undergraduate poli sci majors, I am aware the 1st amendment doesn't apply to the NFL) isn't it ironic that when it comes to the two categories of homosexuality and religion, it is religion that is supposedly the more protected caregory by our courts. All this crap about the NFL is a private organization that needs to protect it's business interests by keeping it's players from saying offensive stuff is predicated on the notion that the customer base of the NFL is more in the Michael Sam camp than the Tim Tebow camp. If you believe that I have a bridge I could sell you in boys town.

The question isn't whether one should or shouldn't be a fan of either. The question is this: do we want to live in a country where one's opinion on either Tebow or Sam is grounds for termination at our job?

I'm not a big fan of glory-be-to-god showboating.

You realize the stuff about offending the fan base is just flame, right? Look at what happened with A&E and Duck Dynasty: a show that became popular because of the backwoods characters unapologetically evangelical Christian lifestyle saw the network try to punish one of the main stars to speaking a (admittedly clumsily phrased) version of the traditional Christian view of homosexuality. Tell me, how many homosexuals do you think regularly watched that program? But they were out making the most noise because they are part of the "outrage industrial complex" that loses its s**t any time someone offends them. Of course, when A&E realized the true fanbase of the program, those who actually watched it and were the ones making A&E money, the network backed off.

I think the same thing would happen if the NFL tried to really punish someone for voicing concerns with flagrant displays of homosexual affection like Sam did. I think part of the reason this flew under the radar is players get fined for stuff all the time. You are right that I would guess there are a far larger number of traditional Christians in the NFL fan base than their are people who would lose it over a comment about being uncomfortable with Sam's display. But for the time being that latter group makes more noise.

I agree that it is a troubling direction we are moving in.

The silence from those who applaud this double standard is deafening. They have no argument other than "we're right, you're wrong"... or "you're on the wrong side of history!" Can't say I'm surprised that we've yet to see a resident Rawls, Kymlicka, or Sandel show up to try and defend this double standard as consistent with their veil of ignorance mumbo jumbo or whatever it is the kool kids are doing in theory workshops these dayz!

Tebow was made fun of a few times for seeming to believe that God cared about how well Tim Tebow played on the football field. Sorry if you think that's unChristian but some of us find it laughable that the Lord Savior Creator of the Universe cares about how well a football player throws a football.

And it doesn't help when that player sucks. Tebow became satirized because he participated and encouraged himself to be incredibly over-hyped and attributed all his success to the Lord God his Savior.

In Sam's case, he hasn't tried to promote his sexuality as having any relevance to his football playing.

It's a fu.cking Florida State player--ONE PLAYER--who started this faux controversy.

All I can say is that you must know even less about football than you do about politics. If you think Tebow got "too much attention" relative to Michael Sam, you're nuts. Tim Tebow was a Heisman Trophy winner, National Champion, and one of the most decorated players in college football history. Oh, and he was a 1st round NFL draft pick.

Michael Sam was a very good college football player. He was drafted in the 7th round of the NFL. The amount of media coverage (I didn't see a president of the united states tweeting Tim Tebow during his playoff run with Denver) that Sam as a 7th round draft pick has received is a joke relative to Tebow.

Engage the actual argument bro. Your response was weak. There IS a double standard. Would Brendan Eichman have been forced out at Mozilla if he'd donated to a ballot initiative sponsored by Americans United for Separation of Church and State that took away the scholarships of needy minority students to attend parochial schools and then tweeted something negative about those students' families and their religious beliefs?

^He was a great college player. He was a god awful NFL player, how ironic. So yes, he was heavily over-covered for how bad he was. People latched on to him because of the lame god branding, as suggested accurately by a poster above. He was an insult to professional football. The college cult of Tim Tebow (and his religious shenanigans) are what led to him becoming a media circus when with the Broncos, then the Jets. You must not watch much professional football if you think he was talented enough to deserve that much coverage at the NFL level.

Reading comprehension is your friend, Odo. Never said coverage of Tebow while he was in the NFL was consistent with Tebow the NFL talent. Rather, I said that, IN COMPARISON TO COVERAGE OF MICHAEL SAM, Tebow's coverage was warranted. Tebow actually won a playoff game as a QB in the NFL. Sam was a 7th round draft pick who hasn't done anything yet in the NFL. I was making a comparative claim. Of course Tebow was over-covered. I guess it's news when an NFL player isn't gang banging ala Aaron Hernandez and instead is talking about giving back because of his faith since that sort of behavior is such an appalling outlier in the league.

The point remains that the Sam/Tebow comparison on criticism is a double standard any way you look at it. Sam and Tebow have both had tons of supporters (the christian community for Tebow, the gay rights community for Sam). That's fine and well. But the reality is that BOTH were criticized on social media or at least people expressed strong opinions about both on social media (including NFL players). Yet, only one of these minorities (the gay one) and not the bible thumping evangelical was important enough to defend by fining NFL league employees for stating their views about....

Come back and argue on substance. I dare you. Seriously. You have nothing to argue.
