In case of Essex, it's more, you loose many, you gain many. It's not bad per se, but it makes people suspicious about what is like to be there.

I think location is the main driver indeed. It’s almost impossible for a spouse to find a job in Colchester because this is too small. And since the department doesn’t make two-body appointment...

the turnover at essex is huge, 5 years ago over 75% of the department were different folks. This entails some inner power struggles, probably dictated by the corrupt peace science group

It's actually one of the few departments in the UK that have a history of making spousal hires. Probably because they aren't run by Brits, who would normally regard this as nepotism.
