What will happen to NL?
Is stuck in EL and really wants to leave but can't because reputation is in tatters. My dept didn't interview her in part because of this.
I'm assuming she really wants to move back to CA given that she has degrees from SD, LA, and Bay Area. I'm assuming she could find some job in the state.
Who would hire someone who’s clearly lying in top journals?
Tingley lied in a mid-tier IR journal about doing a bootstrap he never did. In his only solo piece pre-tenure. The rest is obvious free-riding, including exploiting juniors. Why are there no consequences for him?
Weird change of subject. The Hajnal scandal is analogous to someone publicly calling out Tingley and then Tingley lying about it in a follow up comment. When that happens, we’ll talk about it. Until then, it’s not at all comparable.

The discussion is about how lying publicly about your research in a journal should disqualify you from holding an academic position. The circumstances don't have to be identical. Tingley was also publicly exposed on this forum for the bootstrap lie a few months ago. And there are others who lied in print and need to be drummed out of the discipline, not just Tingley and Hajnal and his coauthors.

As far as I know, he wasn't. Write it up as a note and post it to your website, as Grimmer did, and then we'll believe you. Until then, you're just a PSR troll.

And to be completely clear, if the DT error were in fact pointed out and he acknowledged it and corrected the record, nothing should happen to him. Just as if ZH had acknowledged the mistake and corrected the record.

Anyone who publishes will eventually make a mistake. The unpardonable sin is lying when the mistake is clarified, as ZH and coauthors did.

This is incorrect. If he lied about it intentionally the first time (and he will have to prove that it was a genuine error and not research misconduct) then even if he acknowledges it, it is still research misconduct, punishable with various sanctions up to tenure revocation and termination. Confessing to a crime does not mean the crime wasn't committed. The Hajnal et al. case is even worse: research misconduct aggravated by intentionally lying about it. He and his coauthors should be terminated for cause.

Obviously if he lied about it the first time, he should be punished. But the probability that anyone makes it through their career without making a coding error is pretty low. You think anyone would knowingly misinterpret an interaction term and miscode data, then post the replication archive?

That's totally different from lying in the JOP reply. Here, there's no ambiguity.

Nicolas: If it's a minor negligent coding error then he might get away with a slap on the wrist. Too much negligence is also punishable, even if not intentional. However, my understanding is that the Tingley misconduct is not about a coding error, as in the Hatemi case, but a blatant lie about a procedure that was actually never used.

Nicolas, why do you care so much about the fate of someone like DT, who is clearly incompetent and dishonest, and widely despised, even by some of his coauthors? It would actually be a good thing for Harvard IR to have him replaced with a good scholar. They've been a disaster in that subfield for quite some time, especially after Simmons' departure. Harvard does have the resources to attract good scholars.

UCSD is a different story. They have a chronic problem with the hiring and retention of good scholars, and on paper ZH looks good. He probably also fills some teaching needs. So not as easy to replace him.

"Harshly reprimanded" is not a meaningful sanction for research misconduct. "she hasn't lost her job yet." she has tenure and Yale has no intention of investigating her research fraud. she won't lose her job.

And for all we know, maybe ZH and his little helpers have been harshly reprimanded. LOL

That's the thing. Severity of research misconduct has to reach La Cour-levels before anything happens. Nothing will happen to Ana de la O, whose career is alive and well as tenured Yale faculty, and nothing will happen to ZH and his helpers.

de la O is the only one who can somewhat credibly claim she had no idea of the abnormal 300% data values. ZH and DT are worse than Cuddy, and on par with La Cour in terms of dishonesty and lying.
