I call bulls**t. The only way you dump the PhD is replacing it with a bunch of BS master's program is to make money. Teaching load is barely changed.
Help! My dept wants to get rid of its phd program

I am sorry to hear this OP. I would be disappointed to lose our PhD program. While work, it is one of the best parts of being at a R1. We are not in the top 10, but 10-40 range. Some students very rewarding.
I would make your argument for why to keep it. Perhaps scale back in size if cost is an issue?
-
This would be a smart option for many universities. All the arguments so far have to do with how nice it is to have a reduced teaching load...not if a low-ranked PhD program is providing anything truly useful for the students or society.
They do. I'm sure you won't believe it but those programs do place their students (in low ranked positions). Those of us who teach at those kinds of places know this even though that information doesn't trickle down to PSR.

Get over yourself. Teaching a 3-3 will still give you time to crank out whatever remarkable "scholarship" you are capable of producing. The world is not waiting breathlessly for your next epic work. Being a tenured professor and teaching undergrads is a good gig.
^^^ this, 100%. Count your blessings, OP.
You're a TT professor at a decent U.S. university. You presumably earn a competitive salary, enjoy good benefits. Chances are likely very good that you will get tenure, amirite? Then you'll be able to keep this good job for life (with a little higher salary, too). Your town/city is probably not an awful place to live in, eh? You can do fulfilling work teaching students while enjoying lots of time off to engage in other pursuits if you're so interested. You hold a job that is prestigious, affords you lots of independence, and does not involve risky, back-breaking work. And since you're not at an R1 you can avoid a lot of the nasty, petty, stress-inducing professional politics that surrounds the R1 world.
So here's my advice to you, OP: kwitcherbitchin
