I talked to BAP a few times on twatter. He was far more generous with his time than I deserved. He boost(ed) small accounts; creates genuine enthusiasm and conviction among his followers. They all want to be better.
The coolest thing is meeting BAPsters in real life. We can detect each other almost immediately, first through phys check and then through grasping how full of life the other is. It is very easy to make frens with a fellow BAPster--we all trying to find our frens.
No one in political science can even dream of having this kind of impact.

And that's saying something.Why do you think it's sad? What is sad about being introduced to a galaxy of new books and thinkers and then finding friends to read them with? What is sad about become physically stronger?
Are there any political scientists have this kind of effect on people? None that are alive that I know of.

The real question is whether those books, ideas, and friends help you develop into a better, wiser, kinder, more enlightened human.

There are a few dull and vicious Bapsters, sure, but by and large I have met men who found purpose and a new love of life; who became wiser, stronger, and more beautiful.
Kindness has to be proprerly understood; for in some cases, to genuinely care for the good of another, you may need to be harsh with them. And more enlightened? That's what got us into this mess to begin with!
