NYU students please share how you live on what NYU pays you, specially if you don't have subsidized housing.
Is NYU´s stipend enough to live in such an expensive city?

OP here.
This is incredibly discouraging to apply. Are there any NYU PhD students here who can tell me how they make ends meet?
I don't come from money so my family supporting me is not an option, but Bruce Bueno de Mesquita is the academic I most admire bar none and the very reasson I want to go into academia.

Maybe you can live with him? Can’t hurt to shoot him an email, explain your situation at length, and inquire if he has any free rooms/spare top bunk.

Is this a joke?
Their stipend is 46k a year, which is more than enough to live on if you rent with roommates in an outer borough and don't have a family to support/some other high costs in your life. No you can't get a one-bedroom close to campus, but every transplant who has lived in NYC for more than a couple years knows that that is something only people from Kansas and trust-fund kids aspire to.
Take the 25 min subway ride commute to Brooklyn, enjoy the cheap food there, avoid nights out that involve splitting $200 cross-borough uber XL trips with boring people, don't pick up a $300/month brunch habit, and it is plenty of money if you dont't invent ways to be a dumbass with your money. Ffs, Brooklyn is crawling with Princeton ABDs because its cheaper than that part of New Jersey.
As a previous poster said, if you have half a brain, many many things in NYC aside from rent are cheaper and more convenient than supposedly reasonable cookie-cutter cities in flyover states. You might even find that compared to Boston or the West Coast, you can get way cooler housing for 10-15% less if you learn how to look.

Tis such an American concept to commute 50 minutes/day. Maybe if you walked more, the health benefits would compensate for your lack of affordable healthcare.
Yes, very very American and not at all what the vast majority of most people living in any world city do as a bare minimum.

Merton thinks direct flights to Cancun and Vancouver = "international" airport

If you do a TA thing on top of the stipend at NYU, you earn as much as a postdoc would earn. Commuting to NJ or Brooklyn takes about 50 minutes door to door. The train itself takes 20 minutes. Some people managed to stay in the city but with lesser accommodations. As long as you don’t hang out around campus between 9pm-6am, you are safe. But NJ near NYU area is “very” safe and clean.

Why are you people asking these things on here? You can’t assess the replies and these threads are always filled with lies.
Wherever you’re admitted you should attend the admit weekend and talk to grad students. Yes they can also be biased but they’re usually pretty open and willing to discuss downsides of their programs. If you can’t attend, I’m sure the era of zoom can put you in touch w real people.
Unlike the tr$ll fest of this place!

Only rent is expensive.. everything else is cheaper in NYC
You can find affordable places with reasonable commute through train, ferry, tunnel, bus..NYC rocks11 nays.. Merton said what I wanted to say but dreaded getting deleted by the bots.
1. Naysayers, name one(1) good/service relevant to a childless twenties grad student that is more expensive in NYC
2. Merton hinted at this but everybody hustles in NYC. IME the girls who find sugar daddies are not normal. They tend to be pathological in other ways too, like drug addiction.
The area around NYU is the second richest county in the country, after Beverly Hills. Find a way to funnel some of that cash into your packet. Offer a rich fk to walk his dog while teaching it Plato at the same time.
