Is NYU´s stipend enough to live in such an expensive city?

Why not just go to a university where you’re not a slave to COL and can live off a TA/RA stipend and focus on your studies? Seriously if you’re stacking up side hustles and commuting from god knows where, you’re not going to have time to read and write on the scale necessary for professorial success. YOUVE ALREADY LOST.

Only rent is expensive.. everything else is cheaper in NYC
You can find affordable places with reasonable commute through train, ferry, tunnel, bus..NYC rocks

1. Naysayers, name one(1) good/service relevant to a childless twenties grad student that is more expensive in NYC
2. Merton hinted at this but everybody hustles in NYC. IME the girls who find sugar daddies are not normal. They tend to be pathological in other ways too, like drug addiction.
The area around NYU is the second richest county in the country, after Beverly Hills. Find a way to funnel some of that cash into your packet. Offer a rich fk to walk his dog while teaching it Plato at the same time.

I knew people would misread 2. I was trying to be funny, but also hinting at the serendipity in NYC that is PRICELESS. The band busking at Union sq will be better than the best band at Bu/mfu/ck.

By 1 alone I am questioning your claim that you need to be a sIave at all. You can find cheap apartments in the Far East village. You can live in NJ or Jersey City; ~20 minutes away by train. There are multitudes, anything is possible.

How does NYU stipend compare to Columbia?

The real difference, at least based on my experience (which is admittedly from a little while ago), is that Columbia is much better in terms of student housing. There are definitely limits (try not to be married; definitely don't have kids; and be prepared for some of your roommates to be weird), but if you're in student housing it's definitely affordable. There's still a huge chunk of New York that's out of your budget, but there's a whole lot that's perfectly doable, too. I wouldn't live in New York now that I'm married and have kids, but spending five years in my twenties at Columbia was awesome, even before you factor in that I got a great graduate education.

yeah housing is more expensive but there is literally nothing I'd rather spend money on then living in nyc

Hey OP - why don't you willingly move to one of the most expensive cities in the world despite knowing you have options to receive just as good of an education, if not more so, in a far less expensive city. Then rally all your comrades together, complain about how unjust your situation is, and then strike for a 100k stipend a year!

This is incredibly discouraging to apply. Are there any NYU PhD students here who can tell me how they make ends meet?
I don't come from money so my family supporting me is not an option, but Bruce Bueno de Mesquita is the academic I most admire bar none and the very reasson I want to go into academia.

If this is serious and not a troll... then this statement alone is reason not to go to NYU. Going to a PhD department because you worship one senior scholar is a recipe for failure. It keeps you from developing your own independent outlook on the world and your own brand/identity. (Set aside the fact that BDM in particular is retiring soon, and has a bad recent track record of placing students.)

There are other academics at NYU that would make dream advisors for me and the courses looked amazing back when they would upload syllabi to the departments page, but I am aware of BDM's age and so this year I only applied to Stanford (my current dream program, specially if I get to work with Fearon).

If I dont get into Stanford, besides improving my application, I will cast a wider net next cycle and with this precious info I will consider NYU one of my very top choices.
