Kirk, I attempted to sticky this topic. My mod control panel at the bottom of this thread tells me it is sticky-ed (stickied?) but it doesn't stay at the top of the front page. Thought you should know.
Kirk here - Let's discuss how to improve PSR
-
From my perspective getting rid of the racist, homophobic, sexist, misogynist, and slanderous material would be a big improvement. Glad to read that the moderation is going to be more active. It might also help to have a [serious] tag for threads to help those looking for truthful advice rather than snide remarks from some of the bottom-feeders who frequent this spot.

Why is this site restricted to academic political science folks? That is, only educational institution addresses are permitted for registration. There are a lot of political scientists in commercial and govt positions.
Apparently anyone can post anon. So why register?
-
When you delete offensive posts, is it possible to signal that something has been erased? For example, in the recent "who was denied tenure" thread, it was nice to remove the comments on a AP about to get tenure, but now the thread makes no sense⦠It would be better if there was something like an empty place.

I am a dean who checks this site just to see what the next generation says about the job market. I must admit, when I read much of what's posted here -- by the "trolls" especially -- I worry for the state of the discipline.
Self-centered, arrogant, self-serving, rude, and cruel... I could go on Honestly, why would I want to even spend five minutes with someone like that, much less offer him/her a job with the promise of lifetime employment?
I don't care how great your science is. Call me when you've grown up and learned some manners.
-
How anonymous is the registration process anyway? While I realize your email is not visible to any regular PSR posters, do mods have access to those emails (and hence can they see who is posting what from the registered people?).
Only I can see them if I dig into the database. If you are worried about this just sign up with a throwaway gmail account.

I always enjoyed the humor, but it probably doesn't seem as funny for panicked, desperate ABDs watching their dreams collapse with no other options. I have always been a winner in life, smart and talented enough to have a job and be successful, but we need to look at it from the loser's perspective. No laughing matter for them.

Kirk,
I'd like the ability for mods to either change titles or to have a tag on the subject about what section it is in. For example, there is a current thread titled "Northwestern." It is unclear if this is information about a job or a student asking a question. I think Northwestern [Grad Question] vs Northwestern [Job Info] would be helpful.

Please - mods, be more aggressive about deleting clutter. Not just offensive clutter, but the inane type as well.
The irrelevant posts about the department secretary just make it difficult to find any interesting material.
Like this post on the Q-step thread. "Me more interested in the DubStep lectureship. It went to Rob Ford's bro:"
Delete, delete, delete! Or at least allow us to flag for deletion. -
Another vote against humor, more for the nasty (but politically correct) blunt, harsh, honest assessments.
