I wonder if people like her should be professors. I'm sure she would be very good as a consultant at something like the Hoover institution or rand. You get respectability and you don't have to do things like advising (which she's patently awful at)
Lynn Vavreck is skating on this one huh?

You people are disgusting. Vavreck is more of a victim in this than anyone. She trusted that a supposedly star student, who had glowing endorsements from the likes of Don Green, John Zaller, and Shanto Iyengar, was not full-out fabricating data. How was she supposed to know he was an ace conman, when his coauthor--the great Don Green--didn't even know?

Honestly, I've heard more people complain about LV at conferences than any other senior scholar, and I'm not even an Americanist. The usual story is she's a careerist and schmoozer who won't give the time of day to her lessers. And that fits this narrative: why bother reading your student's cv or dissertation when there are people to suck up to?
-
Lacour had all those fake grants on his CV and she was never suspicious?
I read his CV a while back because I saw him present.
I couldn't believe these institutions were funding this type of project (not because the project is bad, but because is not what they typically fund) and giving the money to a grad student. What was really weird was the Ford Foundation grant to work on changing minds on abortion for 160,000. Ford Foundation doesn't give money for that specific type of project, and it only gives big grants through institutions. There was no mention of any institutions working on the topic in the US in their grant search. THAT IS THE WORST -- THE FACT THAT ALL THOSE INSTITUTIONS HAVE ALL THEIR GRANTS ONLINE AND SHE COULD HAVE DONE A SIMPLE ONLINE SEARCH!!!
Anyway, now Buzzfeed says he never got any of those grants. They contacted the foundations.

What a great idea, Lynn. Try your arguments out here first and see how they're received. I guess it's time to shelve this argument and try a new one. Hey! Look on the bright side: you can treat this as a revise and resubmit.

Supervising and training ML was not one of the primary reasons for which "the great" Don Green drew a paycheck.
LV has got out of this far too easily so far.

At her congressional confirmation hearing to join the Hillary administration....
Senator:
Mrs Vavreck. I have a reporting my hand of how one of your students fabricated an entire study with serious policy implications for this country. How can we trust you to be an effective manager when your subordinates can pull this sort of thing right under your nose?LV:

Are you joking? If not, the answer is that she could have read his dissertation, paid any attention to the grant money, etc etc etc.

I'd say that record makes her perfectly qualified to be governor of New Jersey.

Why would she quit her $244k do-nothing job for that? http://www.sacbee.com/site-services/databases/state-pay/article2642161.html#req=employment%2Flist%2Fsafename%3Dlynn%2520vavreck%2520lewis%2Fdepartment%3DUC%2520Los%2520Angeles
