Was she denied in the 2020-21 cycle and most of her pubs came out after that?

That is a seriously tough call to deny AJ. I'm a fan of her as a person and her work and would have probably voted to tenure her in my dept. That said, I also think her first book got incredibly lucky because of timing and the quality was not great. But, it's a first book and she certainly has enough other stuff going on to (hopefully) suggest she will improve over time. Plus, you can give people credit for sensing important topics. (Unless you think the timing luck was a fluke not-to-be-repeated)
What is wrong with her book?

This is all true. But what people are reacting to is this happening at Duke, not at CHYMPS. Unless I’m missing something, this kind of tenure denial is very rare at a place like Duke. You can say “Duke is the big leagues” all you want, but that doesn’t mean they regularly deny people tenure like this.
You know, at self-respecting departments quite a few people judge for themselves and do not rely heavily on the shortcuts people have mentioned here. They recognize that fads and external forces can drive citations and awards and that many of the citers and awarders are poor scholars. It would be harder to deny tenure if there were multiple high-placed or highly cited works. This is because it becomes less and less credible to elevate your own judgment above that of what one presumes are many different referees and readers who have come to a different view. Here everything is riding on the book since she has nothing else of significance that one would credit to her rather than a senior coauthor. Duke is the big leagues. This case could have gone either way but if you compare this record to other newly minted associates at similarly ranked places you will see that it would be relatively weak.Duke has given a lot of dudes tenure. Not a lot of women.

She was denied and it is insane. Duke is awful. No one with choices should go there after this denial.
basically this. either a) this is false, b) duke is nuts, c) something really bad happened, like in letters or internally or something.
This is old news. I heard her letters were good and she got through dept. Bad stuff happened internally.

Duke has a long history of thinking the tenure denial rules of HYP also apply. There used to be Youtube videos of Munger lamenting this fact.
