May I ask whether many people nominate reviewers for their journal submissions? Quite a few journals now allow you to do this. If you do this, do you tell the nominated reviewers prior to nomination?
I haven't been doing this and fear that I may be disadvantaging myself.
I’ve done it when asked directly by the editor (or forced to suggest by the journal submission platform), but usually I just leave it to the editors. I’ve been told by editors that authors requested me, but I don’t really know how true this is or who is requesting me (or why).
