AS has been one of the most privileged people on planet earth since the moment of her birth. If you want to help out “a woman of colour” there’s multitudes who deserve it, including many in the field who’ve richly earned an appointment such as the Chichele. AS needs no mollycoddling.

The reason is that for a lot of us the Chichele seemed - seemed - to be the 'top' position in political philosophy in the world. Look at who held it in the past. Waldron, Cohen, Taylor, etc. And we look at AS and we don't see the 'top' person in the field. It's hard to update priors about it. Part of me thinks, fine, and Cohen was young, too, when he got it, and maybe AS will grow into it. But part of me thinks, for the sake of the legacy, that Oxford should just retire the name and keep a position (which AS can have - fine) but not pretend that the current chair is related to the former chair. It's like saying Venice is one of the great cities of the world. It was. It isn't anymore, except to behold as a thing of the past. The Chichele is now like that. And it angers some people, and they take it out on the current occupant, who prob also ruffled a number of feathers along the way anyway. But to my mind, JW was really the last Chichele of the old calibre, and we know he took it on as a kind of favor to his old institution. Or maybe it should be mainly an honorific, not based at Oxford, and holdable by anybody. Then it could move to where the quality is (mainly now, alas, the US, given pay differentials).

True. But then Laborde, recently appointed to replace Miller, was also a Freeden student. But MO and AS didn't get on at All Souls.

There’s no abuse. People just regularly point out how thin AS’s publication record is. But if you have a problem with hyperbole, invective, polemics, etc, you should have a problem with AS. She’s big on the “scholarship” (mostly public intellectual essays in general interest journals and tweets in her case) as activism, moralistic grandstanding, saying politics needs more anger, impugning opponents, etc.

SB didn't get shortlisted, so that's out.
AS may not have published a monograph, but is clearly intellectually of the required standard. They gave her the job 10 years early because after JW and the sh*t-show of the previous failed hires, it was the only way of getting somebody of the required standard into the post. Was she promoted 'too soon' relative to historical precedent? Yes. Will it look like the smart move in 15 years? Yes.

The first piece of info is correct.

The comment on AS is also largely correct, even though the Matthew effect will surely help too; but then prestigious institutions always have a way of making self-fulfilling prophecies. Fwiw, I say this as a fan of AS's work (by and large), and as someone who was rejected for the New College post (and no I'm not SB).

Um, I am the person who wrote about re Chichele. I in no way condone the abuse - that should have been clear, I would have thought, from the nature of my comment ("take it out on the current occupant"). There's no call for that. At the same time, there's a way in which the current occupant is set up, structurally, by having such illustrious predecessors for unflattering comparisons. I wish there were a way to make the new dispensation clear, for everyone's sake. Probably, at a minimum, we should stop describing the Chichele as the most prestigious chair in Pol Phil in the world, etc. as is often done, for it magnifies the sense of disproportion.

How do you know Rina doesn't have a book?

Also, the real question is what was on AS's CV when she was given the Chichele. Once you're set for life in a super prestigious position it's easy to start writing books knowing that top presses will publish them just because of who you are.

This is pure projection. I observed that one of AS’s precious few scholarly pieces is about why there should be more anger in politics then added something about “so feel free to spit in her general direction”. In the context of noting that AS her regularly uses her “scholarship” to encourage anger at other people’s perceived privilege without ever acknowledging her own. So the original comment was an over-the-top joke about AS’s defence of anger, but (a) not about spitting on anyone and (b) not serious. Probably ill-advised but again AS is not one to advise anyone else about lowering the rhetorical temperature.

More important, you’re just trying to distract from how (a) massively under-qualified and (b) massively over-privileged AS is. She’s no victim.

Enough with the bean counting. Could someone concisely describe what is groundbreaking or at least innovative about AS's work? She is surely a great writer but I can't quite figure out what her unique positions or arguments are.

Is that it? Her genealogy stuff seems just an analytic rehash of Foucault. There are plenty of people doing more and better analytic work on genealogy, including at Oxford. She must have done something else.
