How can there be a plumber's union in the Midwest, when the region only got indoor plumbing in the mid-1990s!
Did it ever occur to you that this post is really about the following:
- PSR posters always talk about personal responsibility, and judge people harshly for not being "personally responsible" and not "working hard enough." Some, but not all these people, are conservatives, constantly dredging up tropes about groups of people they find irresponsible.
- Most of these same posters did not "pull themselves up the bootstraps" and apply or get admitted to CHYMPS programs, when the poorest of poor people can access info about these programs get full financial aid if admitted. Poor unconnected people get admitted to top programs all the time. This is a form of attainable privilege.
- You, yourself, dear American individualist personally responsible white man, did not pull yourselves up by your bootstraps. And now you are complaining, against every group imaginable, about your plight. Just like the minorities that you look down on and impugn constantly here.
Maybe you can stop thinking and posting the personal responsibility tropes you constantly discuss here.
Other human beings just like you have their own issues that prevent them from "pulling themselves up by the bootstraps." Sometimes they happen in college, sometimes in grad school, sometimes in the midst of their careers. I will sympathize with you, if you start sympathizing with other people unlike yourself.
In other words, this post isn't really about CHYMPS admissions at all, although there is some good advice about how to manage the admissions process and grad school interspersed in the comments.
And as for the union parents midwest blue collar guy. I am like you, and there are other people in top grad programs just like you. We could be friends. The trope about rich people replicating privilege is not entirely inaccurate, it's just not the whole story.

There is also an element of poverty trying to replicate poverty involved in the process and that is far harder to overcome than any of the other barriers I've experienced in academia.

I suppose I experienced a different version of this.
- I would have loved to get a double degree in law with my Ph.D. like some of my colleagues with family wealth. I could not afford to do this and had no access to credit.
- I took the first TT job offered, and applied everywhere, to places most of my grad school colleagues wouldn't work at in geographical regions they wouldn't live in. I needed money and a job as soon as possible. Others with records that were similar to mine at the time could hold out for longer, and they took 2 or 3 cycles to get the best TT job possible in the best location possible.
So yes, privilege replicates itself at different stages of the process too.
