How possible is it to work on your research and publish while doing a 4-4 teaching load?

Make use of your summer and manage your time effectively during the school year. Try to leave open a free day and use it to do research. So, MW two classes, TTh two classes, and Friday is your research day. Office hours, prep work and grading should all take place M-Th. Also, do a little research on the weekend.
I see. Has this worked, in your experience?

Maybe an article every couple years and the occasional/eventual book?
You're going to have to be more specific on what type of output you are talking about.
Many people on 4-4 still publish. Percentage of people publishing 1 or more articles a year in good/great journals on 4-4s? Pretty low.

Correct. Also do research over weekends, evenings, and holiday breaks. It might seem brutal and exhausting but it is SO worth it to see your name on a published article. And everybody is going to read it and congratulate you.
If you reread my question, you'll see that I asked "how possible is it," not "how is it possible."
What do you mean “how is it possible” lol just open your computer and type. Obviously you have less time and different expectations but fundamentally it’s the same process.
Realistically, you're going to teach summers if you make the average salary of anyone on a 4-4. Don't turn that down. Give yourself a year to get the teaching down, establish a reputation in your department, do your service, etc. The next year you should have enough in the can to get back to publishing an article or two every other year. You won't move to an R1 with that output but you might get to a better teaching school with lighter course loads and the like.
That makes zero difference lol do u think people at 4-4s just never publish. You sit down at your keyboard and start typing when you have free time, it just so happens you have less of it.

Sorry but no one will read it hahaha

So...don't live your life for the hope that in the future you will one day be happy and able to enjoy life. People at 4-4 publish. Not like people at R1. That's fine.
You can publish on a 4-4 but after a certain point it is just pride/vanity. Most people spend their time doing other things - family/teaching/service/hobbies. The biggest barrier to top journals will be access to resources - not time. There are always a few strivers who live and breathe academia...
