Uh, it's not. You're literally the first person I've encountered online or in person who has asked about the political science Ph.D. program at Purdue. It would never occur to me to suggest that an undergraduate consider doing an M.A. or Ph.D. in political science there.

Yep. Don't go to Purdue. Don't even think about it or you may end up an endowed chair at UC Berkeley and having to be the President of APSA like this loser. What a total disaster! Sad!

They just hired a guy in IR. Has like 6 pubs in low ranked places and has been out like 8 years. If that's the best they can hire, they are not a place to send students.

Yeah, he's been out four years and has an IS, ISQ, and JCR while teaching a 3-3. In other words, "the best they can hire" is much better than you.

GTFO. I know a CHYMPS grad who's been out two years on a postdoc and has precisely one article well below the level of the three I mention for this guy. So if the record I cite is poor for a Big Ten, it's pretty damn good in comparison to the "best" in the field. What does that tell you? Oh right, I forgot: the CHYMPS guy's in the process of reinventing IR theory.

Looking at the job placement list (2004-2014), I can't say that they churn out competitive PhDs. There are 4-5 placements at notable flagship state universities (none of which are T20), 1 placement at a notable private university (Howard), 2-3 placements at decent LACs, and 2-3 at non-academic institutions (SPLC, Lockheed Martin, etc.). Otherwise, most are at low-ranking directional universities and similarly underwhelming LACs. Their job placement candidates do not seem to be publishing but have many working papers.

Put it this way, if your goal is to get any teaching job (even if it means entering the never-ending cycle of adjunct professorships), then Purdue will suffice. Otherwise, look elsewhere.
