   But they also interviewed and didn’t get jobs at better depts. and they had terrific CVs on the market. Does this reflect an anti-Mormon bias at top R1s? One would imagine if they were offered jobs at top 25 R1s they would have accepted

   I don't remember with one of these two, but the other applied at BYU a year before he planned to apply elsewhere specifically hoping that he could come here. (BYU has a slow hiring process and seldom gets offers out as quickly as other schools, so applying here at the same time as other schools would have meant he'd be getting offers elsewhere before BYU replied.)

   Besides if they believe that they're undeplaced (and really are), don't you think they'd try to correct that and move up? I know most people here are rank-chasers, but have you considered the fact that some people are really happy where they are. Easy case for tenure, low cost of living, free tuition for their 27 kids to Mormon college, strong neighborhood bonds because of religion.

   You'd be surprised at how many Mormon kids turn down top-20 universities for BYU.

   I believe JH was very happy to go to BYU. But yes, his work is fantastic and if he preferred to be elsewhere it's a shame he didn't get those offers.

   ^^ tuition is only half off for children of BYU faculty, and most have only 3-4 kids, but sure.

   There's also a regional draw to living in the mountain west. Not everybody wants to be in a major metro. AM left Princeton for Utah, and DC left Georgia for USU. It's a nice place to live if you love the outdoors and don't care for big cities.

   Add MB to the mix of under-placed junior folks at BYU. He’s not moving anytime soon for family reasons.

   The irony of the POLMETH dustup is that Provo is a pretty nice place. Good weather, easy access to lots of outdoor recreation. Not a bad food town either, actually. There’s a shortage of bars and coffee shops, but there’s not really a market for those.

   I'm pretty sure AD didn't get any other offers. JH was deciding between a R1 ranked just below 90 by US News and BYU. Not surprising he took BYU given resources and salary.

    I'm not familiar with JH's case, specifically, but I know a lot of Mormon academics would be thrilled to get jobs at BYU over a wide variety of other good programs. Aside from being at BYU, where many of them graduated from, there is the huge appeal of living in Utah. If you know many Mormons who live outside Utah/Idaho, you know that most of them would like to move back to Utah if possible.
