I wouldn't say that these choices were non-subjective though.
They have tenured a bunch, passed on a few over the last decade, seems like what you should expect from a good department. It’s probably a safe bet that whoever gets hired this time will get tenure.tell us more Dortha

I've never been up for tenure at NYU. Tenured elsewhere a while ago. I'd say some there that didn't get it were more meritorious than some who did. But YMMV.
this may well be true, but it is also something that is likely true of every department that sometimes denies people. the tenure process, as we should all know, is highly imperfect. their record hardly seems so egregious that it counts as evidence for it being a "snake pit", though it may be that on other grounds.
