Request a thread to be deleted

Hi all,

If you believe a thread should be deleted please can you reply to this thread and do two things:

1) Provide a link to the thread
2) Provide a short reason why it should be deleted

What will get deleted

- Posts that are too critical of someone's personal life, especially if about other job market candidates. If criticizing others in the profession try to make it about their work.
- Threads with swear words in the title
- Content that is too sexually explicit, especially if not marked NSFW
- Blatant racism, homophobia and sexism. Race and gender issues can be discussed, but threads that aim to provoke unnecessarily will be deleted.
- Duplication or no added value to a recently active post
- Threads with all capital letters in the title
- Copyright infringement
- Complaints about moderation, these should be kept to this thread or emailed to me
- Spamming the board

What may be deleted / or moved
- Threads started in the wrong subforum, particularly if it should have been in off topic
- Obvious / boring trolling. At least make it interesting/amusing if you want to survive.
- Poor jokes & time wasting threads

What won't get deleted
- Posts that you don't agree with but a considerable number of people are ok with. This board allows for open minded discussion, you can't expect to get your way because you are more sensitive than the majority.

What is the spirit of moderation?
- Light touch, you won't notice it unless you are looking to cause trouble.

You can critique their work in a civil manner. No need for unnecessarily nasty remarks like "XYZ is a joke." Instead, you can say: I don't like XYZ's work for A, B, and C reasons. It is not that hard to be civil.

If you want an example of civility, look at the way Saideman writes.

There are some tricky situations. For example, what if you think a journal is corrupt? In my view, you should be able to bring this up but again, you can do it without getting nasty.

Many of us are sick of racist threads, personal attacks, department trashing etc.

It is fine that Kirk runs this thing for some financial benefit (I assume he or she gets some money from this). But if he does that, then he needs to empower the mods to keep it clean.

I of course agree that racist/sexist/etc s**t is awful and needs to be deleted immediately. But I'm still not sure why certain senior scholars seem exempt from criticism. The Zorn thing in particular was ridiculous. The thread was a response to his public attacks on juniors!

I'm not a mod and I haven't followed the Zorn thing so I'm not sure what that was all about. But perhaps a mod can respond to your question.

^We do our best to delete personal attacks. If you are going to criticize someone it should be about their work.

I try to keep scandals that people should know about open, but will delete them if requested.

Kirk, thanks for replying. I think we should delete the nasty stuff about departments too. Here's why and it is very simple: Attacks on departments quickly devolve into attacks on people. So the mods need to do a better job of cleaning up.

Question: Do you need more mods? I would be happy to volunteer but do I need to reveal my identity to you if I want to mod? I am reluctant to do that because no one else (except Saideman) has. I can create a throw-away gmail account for this.

^More mods is always good, if you create a throwaway gmail account and build up a bit of history with that account I can upgrade it to a mod account soon.

I'm not sure I agree on the department attacks. I would try to keep them open but strip out any personal attacks.

I left the JHU postings up. A few were cleaned. I can't remember if I did that or if another mod did that today (it's been a long day). I think the majority of the JHU postings are okay. First, it's not like the postings are going to have real impact. If you're a graduate student, you'll go. If not, they'll get someone to replace you. If you're a potential candidate for a job there, you probably have much more reliable information or will get a feel for the place once you travel there.

If they do devolve into personal attacks, I think we've done a pretty good job cleaning them up.

Departments can pretty much take care of themselves. We only have so much time to mod and it looks like many of us have set our priorities on individual attacks or racist, sexist, homophobic, etc attacks.

Over-moderation is as much of a problem as no-moderation. I think the stuff that was being flagged on the JHU thread was okay. Individual attacks need to go. Pointing out a department isn't productive? That seems like something that doesn't need moderation.

So just to be clear: who decides the moderation policy? Is it Kirk, udhr1948, and hrhphd?

Kirk sets up a forum for his financial gain and then decides what stays and what goes. This hardly seems democratic.

And this is legal trouble waiting to happen. It won't be too long before a well-connected person is mentioned on here, attacks invariably will follow, the mods slip up, and Kirk gets into some serious problems. I've seen this happen before.

All I can say is be careful. When things are flagged, you are better of deleting them (and deleting them quickly). From a legal standpoint, it is better to overmoderate than undermoderate.

^ lol if you think Kirk makes any worthwhile money from this, with the relatively minimal traffic this place probably gets. There are server costs to pay, too. He set the place up because polisciguy let his place go to shiet, and we went trolling on the econ board asking him to do this because we had nowhere else to go. I know, because I was one of the people who hectored him to do it and there were plenty of others.

It doesn't matter whether he is making money (or not). What matters (in a court of law) is whether the site is damaging people's lives and whether there is a strict moderation policy.

If Kirk wants to shoot himself in the foot, that's his call. Personally, I wouldn't take the risk given how bad this site has become and given the number of political scientists who have connections to the legal world.

I'm also deleting the delete requests for the racist thread because that crap doesn't deserve to be immortalized anywhere on the internet.

Flagging also helps, as then it appears at the top of the mod's screen and it is a lot quicker for a mod to delete.
