It looks like he has an assistant professor job now in Colorado for the fall. But it also appears that he is Canadian so he will likely need to go through a visa process to get an HB-1 visa to work in the US and the rules for that are getting more and more strict under the current administration, according to media reports. Many schools aren't even supporting those right now, according to their websites. So his visa situation might also explain why he was having trouble getting a professor job in the US. He'll probably be starting the visa process now (with a sponsor). And it doesn't appear that there are any guarantees that he will get it under the current administration, according to new data on that. I think in the past it was practically guaranteed, but now things appear to have gotten more strict, according to media reports. So this could have been a factor in his difficulty in getting a job or even interviews for the US...despite a lot of publications. Schoools seem to ask very direct immigrations questions in applications. I am also wondering if anyone has had problems like this.
Seriously - how can this happen?

Vienne: Where do you see that information? Link to that information.
You can find a lot of articles on Google News, which include professors and international students, who are being denied H1-B visas at a much higher rate than in the past. Lots of info out there, but nothing on what you just wrote.

Get out,
yesterday
. This is not uncommon. I got my PhD from a decent program (ranked 15-20) two years and I went straight to private sector. I followed up with some ppl I know from my program to see what's going on. Nobody's getting TT jobs. ABDs and now VAPs with multiple solo-authored pubs in good journals are not getting TT jobs. One guy from my cohort defended same time as me two years ago. He has two top threes including one solo and a bunch of other things and is on his second VAP. Still no bites this year.Maybe take one hit on the market and give it your all but then get out. More pubs won't get you a TT job. PhD in hand won't get you a TT job. 'Networking' with bigshot at MPSA won't get you a TT job. There are too many candidates to chose from, the only thing that gets you a TT job is luck. Anyone who tells you otherwise is a liar or a damned fool. Academia was once a good path to a middle class life, it's not any more.

My experience matches that of Kimball, above, with the only difference being that I came from a slightly higher ranked place (10-15).
Except I’m one of the people 2 years out and unable to find a TT job and looking for an exit strategy.Oh, exit strategy. The US isn't good at those...

Even if you get lucky and end up at a big public flagship, chances are you are facing years of wages barely keeping up with inflation (or not, if you're in most red states). And this situation is the best-case scenario going forward. Almost every state is still well under 2007-8 funding for universities, and this is after years of a "good" economy. Next recession hits it is going to be brutal. Unless you're one of the dozen people each year who get a job at a rich private university, this job is a joke (and even at those schools the increasing rule of HR and snowflake students is an issue).

lol at the misinformation in this thread.
if a university wants to hire a foreigner into a TT, it's not a problem.
- signed, a foreign academic who lives and works in the USThat is unfortunately not the case for many smaller schools. It isn't an issue of "not being able to," but "not wanting to spend the time and/or lacking the institutional resources to take care of the paperwork."

Cyrus have you picked up a newspaper lately or followed the current immigrations debate in the US at all? Anybody with the ability to access Google News knows what I am talking about. No, schools can't just do whatever they want or hire whoever they want. First they have to have the resources to hire you and permission. They also have to get permission from the government....yes, so obviously professor jobs are included with the current immigrations debate. Being a professor isn't some magical category with immigrations. I am sure they are a part of the quarter of H1B applications that are getting turned down these days over at US immigrations. I am not an expert on this, but I can easily read information online about this, which you also have access to if you are online now.

Professors are cap exempt.

We are political scientists, people. Let’s not suggest a relationship from a couple of cases. Show me everyone on the market, control for school, subfield and publications, and then if people with 5 publications are getting denied across the board, then we’ll talk. If this individual was American without the visa challenges I expect he would have gotten a job.

Have you seen the applicant pool for assistant professor jobs these days? We ran an open American search this year and there were easily 30 candidates equivalent to this guy in terms of record. At that point it becomes about idiosyncratic fit and your record no longer stands out as an accomplishment. Very easy to fall through the cracks.

White/Asian males in American politics / behavior: SM (Harvard), GS (Harris), EM (UBC), JM (Emory). Many others with strong records lucked into a single offer: DS (Colorado state) and SW (Indiana)
Add AT (Princeton PhD, Yale Postdoc). No offers for the third year in a row. Best record of any of these. No I'm not AT
