Um there was more to the story to why MM left...
Yep. Lots of us have the opportunity to leave and get paid. But we stay because the academic life in a functional department is worth more than money. UIC can’t keep good people, mike and Nicole. And it actively tries to get rid of the few good ones they have like Choi and BV.
BS. Valeriano and Choi are/were the worst offenders in terms of dysfunction. Choi gave out negative grades (literally less than "zero") for papers, which is why he was stripped of the stats course. BV told grad students during his interview that you should make sure to have sex with undergrads as a grad student bc it's harder to get away with it as faculty. The idiot buddies and acolytes of BV and Choi should be careful not to throw rocks in glass houses. The truth stings.
Read the stuff they said about Choi. I agree: he's an asshole. But I'm pretty sure he's not an asshole because he's a Korean... and that's exactly what the department said about him on several occasions. They needed him to teach the stats course; he didn't want to, and so sabotaged things; and they said let's go racial. Is that a department you want to be in.
BV's BV. The accusation you level at him could be true - he's like that. But it's probably false, like most of the stuff people say about him. As with Choi, there's plenty there not to like personally, but the department bollixed it up by playing it like a bunch of amateurs.
It all comes down to this: you're stupid to deny someone tenure or promotion just because you don't like them in a personal level. And if that someone is publishing at a clip far beyond their peers, and you deny them tenure/promotion because you think they're an asshole, be prepared to suck as a department, and reap the whirlwind in the estimation of your department.
