Fact One: The Dept received 38 applications for the AP position: 36 complete and 2 incomplete

Fact Two: The Dept invited 4 candidates for campus visit: XV (AP, Arkansas, UCR Ph.D.), MP (Visiting AP, Arkansas, Mexico Ph.D.), TB (Research AP, Northwestern, Stanford Ph.D.) and LC (AP, UCR, UWash Ph.D.)

Fact Three: 1 of the 4 invited candidates failed to complete her application package

Fact Four: The Dept has known all along that there were 33 candidates who completed their applications but none of them were invited to Chicago. This did a disservice to the Dept, the University, the Profession, and most importantly the candidates who spent endless time and money to make their application package perfect and complete and believed in fairness and equity in the evaluation processes

Fact Five: The Dept made their hiring decision on the 6th of December

Fact Six: Some of the above facts were posted on PSR on the 7th of December but deleted on the same day

Im a fan of PSR misinformation/this post but would point out that there’s no law saying you can’t hire someone who didn’t finish their application. But most academics have never had a job other than graduate assistant by the time they reach 29-year-Old ass prof application status, so they may not realize this.

Yes it does. I chaired a search committee a few years back and one requirement by our HR department is that no one can proceed through to the next step without a completed file. According to HR, there is no wiggle room with this. How do they know, you might ask? All materials for each candidate has to be submitted to HR before calls for invites.

It may be different at other campuses but federal hiring laws dictate this policy across most universities and colleges.

What does “failed to complete her application package” mean exactly?

It’s totally possible that a person could submit every item requested and still be clearly inferior to someone who left out a teaching stratement, didn’t get one reference delivered, forgot to send a transcript, etc.

And why is anyone else spending “endless time and money” on one app? Seems kinda dumb tbh.

Yeah, I don't see how putting this on PSR will help OP. You are obviously on the faculty and possibly on the search committee. If you said one word about incomplete applications in person, your colleagues will know who posted the dirty laundry on PSR. That's not going to end well.

By far the biggest news on this thread: an ad for an assistant professor job in the one the most attractive cities in the world received a grand total of 38 applications.

I was on my department's search committee for an assistant professor last cycle. We're an LAC in a rural, Southern location. We received nearly 130 applications.

This story is saying something important about UIC, but it's not what OP thinks it is.

The 38 applications can’t be true. Chicago has gone down recently in the rankings but they are still a decent department. Maybe splitting with Harris hurt worse than anyone thot.

By far the biggest news on this thread: an ad for an assistant professor job in the one the most attractive cities in the world received a grand total of 38 applications.

WTF are you talking about? That is complete and utter bull s**te.

YOUR HR may require this. But "complete" for HR may mean something very different from "complete" for a department from "complete" on PSR.

Partial applications are considered all the time.

Yeah this is really vague and sounds really butthurt. An incomplete application can happen can mean someone just forgot to attach their teaching statement, and really, who gives a s**t.

" Candidates who do not submit their documentation in accordance with all of the requirements listed in the position announcement or with another procedure approved by the Office for Access and Equity should not be reviewed and should be marked as “Incomplete Application” for their applicant status....Using the written selection criteria referenced in Chapter 4.1(F), the search committee should review and evaluate all submissions of interest that meet the requirements of an applicant. To ensure trust in the fairness of the search process, the screening process cannot be arbitrary or give the appearance of being so."

The incomplete application has nothing to do with tertiary documents such as a writing sample, teaching evaluations, etc. that can be found online.

What is OPs end game here? Obviously an insider. Perhaps OPs horse did not get a visit. Does OP want a failed search? Why would that outcome be better than hiring someone OP doesn't like
