We brought in three candidates. One we gave an offer but they declined.
The other ones seemed OK on paper, but were strange in person and their twitter/social media accounts should have been taken as a warning before we brought them in. Think of Holbs meets the Chick From Tulane. Awful.

hard to believe. that's impossible.
I meant one was more on the Holbs side of twits and the other candidate was more like The Chick from Tulane.
But as this search reopens, please shut down social media (even mastodon), because we're checking it first now before we waste our time.

Do search committees really care about how annoying someone is on Twitter? Seems like a dumb thing to care about when hiring a colleague.
If someone has been consistently annoying and displaying undesirable personality characteristics on social media, it would be just as bad as doing the same thing repeatedly at conferences. So yes, people develop reputations. That's how the world works!

Of course they do. I chaired a search last year. Had a good candidate, but he's an @$$ on twitter and thus we didn't interview him. Why would we want someone that trashes his current department? He'd just do it here and we're not about that. Bye.

Not sure "Midwest is making a comeback." St. Louis proper is not doing well overall. But the metro area -of which it is a small part- is doing OK. Not booming, but OK and there are plenty of nice neighborhoods and cost of living is very reasonable, yet still some benefits of living in a sizable metro area. You could do a lot worse.

St louis, twin cities, Columbus, Chicago... Midwest is best

The others are real cities, even if they've seen better days. Isn't Columbus just a big mall?
