Yep. Pretty clear spousal hire. Though ain't nothing wrong with that for a solid candidate.

not sure why this is ipso facto evidence that this isn't meritocratic.2 Princeton hires, so incestuous. I'm glad we all know that academia is a meritocracy so we don't have to deal with ethics like that!
(I mean, we all know there's more than "merit" that goes into these hires, but having two PhDs from Princeton hired somewhere doesn't provide any evidence one way or the other)

If this is actually true, it would be nice if someone would at least post initials.

Very nice record. But is this really for the Congress and Presidency line? Great work on incarceration but I don't see a single mention of Congress or the President anywhere...

the art of making fit. searches often say they want one thing and interview in something else. could mean the original search was aspirational or political, could mean they liked a different pool of candidates in a tangential field,, than the one advertised. could mean something else, which is why you should apply as widely as possible kidos.

Well I mean, I think we know exactly what it "means." It means they wanted to hire someone's spouse, then ensure she was above the bar. Clearly she was, so they hired her. But it does leave quite the gap in their department since I think this person was supposed to replace RV

Yes, offer was made to someone that has a spouse that is currently a tenured (econ) prof. Don't think it was that the deciding factor as it was 1) the fact that she was a Princeton PhD 2) a woman....but oddly, a WHYT woman writing about southern slavery...
Actually, she likely doesn't get a talk for this line otherwise.

Perhaps not, but in this case it’s likely she would not have gotten a talk w/o spouse because they may not have thought they could get a candidate like this to accept without the spouse. That’s the reality behind a lot of flyout calls for smaller schools - they can’t waste time on people who prob won’t say yes. Good for them - it’s a really good profile for them to attract. Smaller LAC departments have to jump on stuff like this and can be flexible on subfield as long as person can teach what they need.

Nah, you are underselling this department's profile. Resources and proximity to Philly made that job extremely attractive for hundreds of candidates.

That’s probably right
