Whoa. I'm late to the game on this but whoa.

What in the hell is going on here? As some people noted above, I think this is partly (largely) on his committee. How could they let him produce a dissertation on this subject? How did anyone think that was a marketable or good idea? Seriously.

Now... kid. Come on. WTF were you thinking? I imagine or hope that your advisers suggested that this was a bad idea. Did you not listen to them? Did you shop around until people just accepted what you were doing?

Seriously, though, to mods like ^, isn't this discussion of junior people out of bounds? Or is the claim now that if you make a public statement (e.g., blog post, op-ed, etc.), then you're fair game? So we can talk about what's-her-name from the math can fix this op-ed and it won't get deleted?

If someone publicly discusses their career and expresses perplexity and their lack of success, that seems fair game.

I also think "math-can-fix-this" was completely fair game as an op-ed to be parodied and a set of opinions to be discussed. But she didn't talk about her career or personal life so I'd stay away from that kind of stuff.

I don't know. This is quite difficult.

1a. Junior person - clearly this is public and I think it is helpful in a way for other junior people / grad students to see.

1b. So far, it looks like people are being somewhat civil about this person.

1c. No flags so far.

1d. Person isn't political science? Not sure if this matters.

2b. I think you can probably discuss her services civilly without attacking her.

Ultimately, this stuff on both ends has probably stayed because no one is flagging it.

I'm out for a day or two again. So, slow modding / responses from me.

I dunno. On this thread he's been called "a joke," a "whiner," his advisors are "the worst."

Also, a "s**tbag," "arrogant," with a "mediocre grad career," and a "pain in the ass."

I guess that's OK? I'm sure if this was a Harvard ABD (or whatever) in Government we wouldn't allow such personal attacks.

But fine. He's a sociologist with a PhD from Mizzou. And an adjunct who lives with his mother. No need to protect those people from personal attacks, I suppose.
