Value of policy publications and experience for AP?

Does anyone here know how much weight is given to policy background, think tank publications and experience when applying for AP at R1?

Policy school? Potentially some. R1 Poli Sci department? Almost certainly zero, though if you get hired for your scholarly pubs it might make the Dean happy.

Policy briefs and think tank reports are usually bad science. Because if they were good science, they'd end up in a good journal as well. Universities prefer good candidates over bad candidates.

I had a bunch of this. R1, SLAC don't care. R2, lower LAC kind of do if you also have academic work and teaching experience. They see it as a way to excite students, parents

Many applicants will just renege on the contract so better off hiring a local who wants the job.

Many applicants will just renege on the contract so better off hiring a local who wants the job.

It is a market. Both the candidate and the university should feel free to renege on a contract at the last minute if they get a better option.

I keep seeing people with 1 or 2 pubs get TT jobs, whereas others with like 10 not get anything. Why? Cause the former are diverse. Now sociologists are getting policy jobs.
