Harvard, stanford and princeton would be great schools to ride out the recession in. Six years of decent funding, some free food and booze, technical training and supple undergrads. I guess more folks will try to ride the phd gravy train next year.
Eh, the funding is still much less then you'd make at any entry level job. I did this "ride out the recession" thing at a PhD program back in 2009, it more or less worked and I had fun. But I would be in a much better position financially and in terms of my future career prospects if I had just gotten a job. I'm still bouncing between temporary positions in academia, and while that has been fun, the writing was on the wall before the pandemic and now its all over my face...
