Just wondering exactly when Wayne State became a better PhD program than USC? Was it relatively recent? Which program will give me a better placement opportunities?
I'm applying for doctoral programs this cycle, please advice.
But why would you come to the US to the study the place that you are from?
My previous studies of the bureaucracy of Chinese state give me great insights into China that not many in the US know of. I think studying under the tutelage of Yumin Sheng at Wayne State bring my scholarship to next level.
USC does not seem strong in study of China and Asia.
Please advice.
I thought this website was where people come to be advice. But it does not seem to be true. I also went to other website called grad cafe and received little advice. No one in China knows how good Wayne State or USC are.
Okay, buddy. You're very persistent. I'll give it to you straight.
The original post comparing Wayne State to USC was a joke, a very obvious joke. It was funny, but I can see how it might mislead you.
USC is much better than Wayne State, which is considered a program of very low quality. If you needed funding, they wouldn't pay you very much if at all. Ten years ago the Wayne State neighborhood was considered one of the safest in Detroit, but that isn't saying much and things may have changed.
If you need a PhD purely to go back to China or an Asian country, then that Chinese researcher at Wayne State might be a good mentor for you. In the US, Canada, or Australia, your chances of getting a position for Chinese politics would be zero.
Now here's the really strange part. USC is much better than Wayne State, but probably not good enough for a white or Asian PhD graduate to get a good job in the US. I like USC better than most academics, but it isn't the Top 15/20/25 program you need to get a good academic job. I'd rank USC about 45/50, and others have ranked it worse.

This is actually a quite useful piece of advice, which is pretty much hard to find on this website these days.

But when I look at US News, most reputable ranking for grad schools, I see Wayne State at #103. USC is not even on the rankings. As far as US News is concerned, USC phd program no exist and is no good. People in China keep telling me USC is only branch campus to Berkeley.
Then I see many threads here discussing how USC is worse than Wayne State. You are telling me these people are all lying?
Please advice.
