Question for the whiners: Has anyone whined into an accomplishment yet? Like have you applied for a job and then showed up at the hiring meeting and whined about how women being employed is unfair until they gave you a job? Probably not. Is there a lesson there?
MM is a terrible hire. She'll get a glorified post-doc for a few years, then when the diversity bubble bursts she'll have to find a job in the private sector.
I commend Harvard for keeping out sneaky mean calculating study machines and giving a chance for the likes of MM. character is everything.
I don't think PR going on the market was the reason. PR got lucky to be offered the job when SW declined, and she hasn't produced much since. There's no logical reason for Harvard to want either of them. But CM had CD (KI's spousal hire) on his committee, and she likely pulled some strings to make that happen. I suspect both will be denied in a couple of years. She's almost halfway through the tenure clock with not much to show. What a waste of resources.

I'm not gonna read all this thread so maybe this already came up but HYY was the favorite for the Harvard line, but then MM blew everyone out of the water with an incredible job talk. Her lack of publications hurt her so she was hired on potential. It helped her that she studies South Asia, which was a gap amongst the comparative faculty, and that her work was relevant to the interests of a lot of people in both Comparative and American.
Worth noting that all 4 people brought out for the line were women, and 3 of the 4 were WOC; race/gender might have contributed to her getting the fly-out (Harvard trying to correct for decades of inequities) but it can't explain why she got the job.
Of course it can. It's a wonder that she got flown out with zero publications. A bit more than half of new PS candidates are women, what a coincidence that no men were flown out! MM's case is the most egregious since she has the publication record of a doorknob. No one will say it but those hired because of their chromosomes will get zero respect at H even if admin forces department to promote them.
