They don't enforce the law.
They just do what they want politically.
It's a long-term extension of the legislature when they were benched.

The Republicans were literally trying to set a precedent that would see the judiciary decide every election for at least a generation.
We just witnessed a group of political appointees DECLINE MORE POWER.
A: How blind are you to want to live under court-mandated government for the rest of your life.
B: How are you not just happily bemused that a group of appointees actually cared about the long-term good of the country well beyond the immediate political controversy?

It isn't meant to be. OP happens to be right - once the judiciary abandons its intended role and devolves into what OP describes, there's really no reason to retain it.
