What happened?
Why is Rochester so bad now?
-
Actually, Rochester is about to turn a corner: after decades of working towards a true and complete science of politics, they realized they had made zero progress and that the enterprise was inherently misguided, so their many quants and formal theorists will soon be sent to high school math departments and will be replaced with APDers and (non-positive) theorists. Viva la revolucion!

Other schools with better locations and more resources copied what they were doing. Then what they were doing became less fashionable anyway.
Rochester grad here,
Pretty much on the money. Oh and in case you don't believe I'm an alum, Nick Tahou's, The Old Toad, Cheesy Edie's, and "See me, Dick."

If so, then I suppose the department needs to find a new niche. Not sure what that ought to be. But I always liked the idea of school like Rochester punching well above its reputational weight. I'd love to see more of that in political science. It would probably lead to a more interesting field overall.

Most of their prestige was connected to formal theory and innovative approach (Fenno). The market has at least somewhat turned away from formal theory and in this day and age, it's near impossible to be truly innovative 95% of the time.
When you factor in location and resources - a slight decline was always in the cards.

You just rattled off a bunch of common knowledge. If you were really a Rochester grad, you’d be talking about the 19th Ward Walmart and the Blunt Store.

Or the bar on Monroe (that used to be next to Gitsis, R.I.P.) with the solid gold cash register.
