Why is Rochester so bad now?

We need to evaluate the quality of the faculty and training and its funding for new hires to judge whether a department is going to continue to be important in producing PhDs. Rochester has issues, but compared with most of the publics, it is in very good shape.
Due to the market, the trajectory in placement is downward everywhere. Having a niche, as Rochester does, will keep it above average in per capita placement for top-25 departments.

So what placements in the last 5 year’s have been to top 25 departments? According to this thread: 0.

So there are 7 "top" placements in the last 5-6 years. That's about one-sixth placements into top-25 (and Caltech) departments.

I'd like to see how that compares to other departments.

And Caltech is clearly better than most top 25 placements.

Only thing they could do. If they rebuilt in a different direction, that would mean the end of the dept as a top 25 place. So they keep going with the tricks they know. It is not location, prestige, or endowment are positives there.

It is because they doubled down on formal theory. Look who they hired/made me offers to this year...

It is a fine niche department. It does one thing well. If you need that thing in your department you hire one of them. But typically only one because you need a range of faculty who know other things.
