Will spousal hires stayl after divorce?

I have been married to this really talented individual who got me into a school way above what I deserved. We are divorcing. Will that affect my employment?

Good question. I guess it depends of whether you have tenure or if you are an adjunt. Also, if he has a stronger position in the department, would he block your stand?(was the divorce friendly or not).

If you have tenure, then no. My department hired two coupes only to have the "star" leave, sticking us with the tag-along. But once they're in, they're in.

Brilliant idea: the spousal hire equivalent of a green card marriage. Marry a friend, bring them along to a great job, then amicably divorce. And in most states, it works with either gender!

Lucrece is stupid. Spousal accommodation is very very difficult to secure, in most places. Depts have to really want both people, or the one really really badly. And even if a dept makes a good case, admin is usually unwilling to channel the funds necessary to make it happen.

That's not true--spousal hire/accommodation is very common across the board. If a spousal hire is weak (and not tenured), a department or unit has no reason to hold on to him/her or accommodate him/her after a divorce.

Lorene, assuming you are not a troll. Obviously if you have tenure, as you know, you are good. If you don't, same rule applies as always -- if you warrant tenure by the somewhat subjective standards of your department and the profession, you are likely to get it. If you don't, then you won't. I have seen a case exactly like the one you describe, in a different department. Star (female in this case, FWIW) got trailing spouse a job. They divorced before trailing spouse came up for tenure, but trailing spouse got tenure on the merits. Star subsequently left, but wasn't an obstacle to tenure for the other person.

I think it will depend on how you get divorced. If you have a long and difficult marriage process, then you can get angry with each other and this will lead to such unpleasant consequences. and if you try something like a service, then everything will go quickly and you will remain on good terms
