Manin and Pasquino were both established scholars and had made a very strong contribution to their fields when they were hired by NYU. In this case we are talking about a barely published person, who hasn't even managed to publish extensively in her own Italian language (not to mention her 0 publication record in English 5 years after her Italian doctorate with an Italian dissertation). And we are talking about someone who, with such "credentials", was chosen over junior scholars with a world-rate record of publications and degrees and international achievements. One obviously cannot but wonder what non-academic reasons led to a decision of this sort in the case of an internal female candidate whose not particuarly impressive CV and academic profile made her the first choice over other female (but not internal) candidates with an unquestionably superior research record. The spousal hire from last year, which someone here mentioned, was a female scholar with an established publication record in some of the very best international journals of the field and a world-class pedigree. The case of GO is very different, and very strange, to say the least, unless considerations of non-academic nature are taken into account.</blockquote>
